but levels of up to 6 mg%0 have been recorded (Lous, 1954). Undoubtedly, acute barbiturate toxicity is associated with the development of neurological signs, such as depressed tendon reflexes and extensor plantar responses (Carroll, 1969) but it is of interest that both patients showed these changes without gross respiratory or cardiovascular depression. Following recovery from coma, both patients admitted taking an overdose of drugs and both were found to be psychiatrically disturbed, much to the surprise and chagrin of their parents who, at the time of admission, had unwittingly misled the attendant medical staff. Acute barbiturate poisoning should therefore be considered in any epileptic patient presenting with atypical coma, even when there is no evidence of possible overdose or of psychiatric instability. Acknowledgments I am grateful to Dr E. W. J. Gumpert for his encouragement and to Dr Gumpert and Dr J. Carson for allowing me to report details of their patients.

Effect of ergotamine and ergometrine on forearm venous compliance in man.
The effect of ergotamine and ergometrine on the venous compliance of the forearm has been studied in normal persons. Ergotamine tartrate (0.25 mg. intravenously) led to a fall in venous compliance amounting to 49% on average, while ergometrine maleate (0.25 mg. intravenously) caused a reduction of 41%; these changes were statistically significant. The potent veno-constrictor action of these erg...
متن کاملErgotamine abuse and extra-hepatic portal hypertension.
Arterial complications following ergotamine therapy have been well recognized since the beginning of this century. Venous complications, however, have only rarely been reported. A 48 year old Nigerian woman developed extra-hepatic portal hypertension coincident with a chronic overdosage of ergotamine. The literature elucidating the possible mechanisms involved is reviewed.

The acute and chronic effects of ergotamine were examined in four patients with chronic orthostatic hypotension. Chronic oral administration of ergotamine tartrate produced significant increases in standing blood pressure and marked clinical improvement, without appreciable recumbent hypertension. The blood pressure increases were not associated with significant changes in plasma norepinephrine...
